As soon as I started gardening here, a friend started trying to convince me to plant a thornless blackberry. This is the Pacific Northwest, I said, why in the world would I plant a blackberry? Every alley is full of them, including ours.
Eventually she convinced me. And I can’t believe I ever resisted. This plant keeps making me think of the book The Giving Tree by Shell Silverstein. It is just covered in berries! Fat, juicy, sweet as can be, luscious berries. With not a thorn in sight.
Humans mess a lot of stuff up. But I think we really got it right this time.
